October, 2005

In October, 2005, ULRMC developed a GIS ÑD-version "Agrobiodiversity of Ukraine" (GIS-Agrobio). "GIS-Agrobio" is a modern supplemental tool, in particular, for administrative officials, scientists and students of higher educational institutions to study spatial properties and dynamic processes, which have occurred in the mega-agroecosystem of Ukraine (agrosphere). The "GIS-Agrobio" was generated in 2003-2005 during implementation of the UNEP-GEF Project "Agrobiodiversity Indicators for National Use" (BINU) in Ukraine. The system complements the two books "Agrobiodiversity of Ukraine: Theory, Methodology, Indicators, Examples" (2005), as well as the bilingual Searchable List of Agrobiodiversity Indicators "SLI".

The "GIS-Agrobio" includes the layers using which ULRMC generated numerous examples of thematic maps to illustrate IFS-forms for indicators and indices description. The "GIS-Agrobio" includes both developments of ULRMC and involved consultants, and, in particular, data of state statistical reporting (kindly provided by the State Committee of Statistics as well). Detailed references to information sources are placed in the above mentioned publications and in each of IFS-forms (see SLI). In a number of examples, when material is a property of another developer, GIS includes only titles of respective layers with a stated contact organization. In some cases, metadata on particular layers are placed in the window "Properties-Description". A set of layers was developed at the ULRMC using RS data (Terra MODIS, 2002). A simplified image for the Ukraine's surface, which is a mosaic of 55 Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images for 1999-2003, was developed by ULRMC using the material obtained from the Maryland University (USA). Administrative boundaries of Ukraine and oblasts are depicted with approximation to materials of a digital map of 1:500000 developed by the Public Enterprise "Interagency Center of Electronic Cartography" ( Kharkov, Ukraine) under the MES (Ministry of Emergency Situations) of Ukraine (1998). Reference information on ecosystems of other country-participants of the UNEP-GEF BINU Project was provided by Malki Saenz (Ecuador) and Richard Odongo (Kenya).
