March 31 - April 3, 2004 - ULRMC participated in a Conference on Forest Fire Management and International Cooperation in Fire Emergencies in The Eastern Mediterranean, Balkans and Adjoining Regions of the Near East and Central Asia held in Antalya, Turkey. The conference was organized by a joint FAO/ECE/ILO Committee on Forest Technology, Management and Training.

During the conference ULRMC presented a report on "Fire Monitoring in Ukraine" and showed the participants some methods of fires identification with the help of satellite images and early warning for authorities. This project has being realized by ULRMC since 2000 and is very important for Ukraine because of a radioactive "red" forest in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone which is very dangerous in the event of a fire.

The participants of the conference also discussed the issues of forest fires prevention and consequences of their impact on the environment, as well as a possibility of creating an international network on fire monitoring for mutual aid, information exchange and fire monitoring. The representatives of Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Germany, Israel, Italy, Poland, Russia, Macedonia, Hungary, Ukraine and Turkey attended the conference. As a result of the conference, Antalya Declaration On Cooperation in WildLand Fire Management in the Balkans, Eastern Mediterranean, Near East and Central Asia was approved.
