September 6-9, 2003 - In Yalta, Crimea, ULRMC hosted and participated in a Science Plan Review meeting for the Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI) project, initiated by NASA. The meeting brought together nearly 40 scientists from 10 countries. The NEESPI Science Plan was reviewed by a panel of experts drawn from academic, governmental, and non-governmental agencies. Several disciplines were represented including hydrology, biogeochemistry, land cover change, climate modeling, and remote sensing.

The NEESPI Science Plan presents the scientific justification, background findings, and proposed science/technical strategy for executing what is arguably a broad thematic study at the continental scale. The mission of NEESPI is to identify the critical science questions and establish a program of coordinated research on the state and dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems in northern Eurasia and their interactions with the Earth's climate system to enhance scientific knowledge and develop predictive capabilities to support informed decision-making and practical applications. An emphasis will be placed on linkages among biogeochemical, water and energy cycles as influenced by human activities, both directly and as a consequence of climate change.

Because Ukraine is included into NEESPI area of interest, Ukrainian experts have taken an active part in the NEESPI Science Plan development. Ukrainian experts, including several from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, were invited to participate in a review committee of the NEESPI Science Plan. As a result of this collaboration, environmental factors associated with the Ukrainian region will be taken into account during the preparation of the NEESPI Implementation.
