November 10-14, 2003, ULRMC Representative and Project Manager of "Biodiversity Indicators for National Use (BINU)" project participated in the 9-th session of Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) of the Convention on Biodiversity which tool place in Montreal, Canada. The representatives of the national teams of the BINU Project (Kenya, Philippines, Ecuador, and Ukraine), as well as the Project's donors and consultants - UNEP-WCMC and RIVM - reported on current results and experience gained during project implementation. Representatives of the Convention Secretariat, governmental and non-governmental organizations, including Global Environmental Fund (GEF), Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine (MENRU) and ULRMC participated in these secessions

As a result of an open competition for Altarum/Nansen University Fellowship Program (UFP) in Ukraine, announced by ULRMC on October 1, 2003, ULRMC representatives selected 5 students out of 10 applicants who would take part in the program in 2003-2004 academic year. UFP aims to provide financial, infrastructure and intellectual support to Ukrainian students pursuing advanced degrees in the application of satellite remote sensing (R/S), geographic information systems (GIS), digital mapping, and other advanced information technologies to environmental and natural resources management issues in Ukraine

Agriculture, Agriculture Research Service in Lincoln, Nebraska presented a
seminar entitled "Using Remote Sensing and Related Tools for Agricultural
Management." The presentation was focused on research being conducted by his colleagues in the U.S. dealing with the use of remote sensing and GIS tools to manage nitrogen so as to minimize the amount of contamination that it causes to surface and groundwater resources

The training focused on spatial analysis of environment conditions and visualization of the results for potential users from selected communities. The materials, based on a pilot GIS for Yevpatoriya (Crimea), identified the most dangerous objects for health that could be mitigated with community efforts

September 11-20, 2003 - ULRMC speciliasts together with the specialists from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducted a training on software, models and database use for the Specialists of Dnipro Basin Water Resources Department of the State Water Management Committee of Ukraine, departments of the Ministry of the Environmental Protection of Ukraine and SWMC. The training was conducted in connection with ULRMC's project on "Water Quality Program Assessment and Abatement Dnipro Estuary Project - Phase 2," an international technical assistance project of EPA, registered with the Ministry of Economy and European Integration Issues of Ukraine

September 6-9, 2003 - In Yalta, Crimea, ULRMC hosted and participated in a Science Plan Review meeting for the Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI) project, initiated by NASA. The meeting brought together nearly 40 scientists from 10 countries. The NEESPI Science Plan was reviewed by a panel of experts drawn from academic, governmental, and non-governmental agencies. August 26 - 29, 2003 ULRMC specialists, together with experts from laboratories of the State Environmental Inspectorate, State Departments of the Environment and Natural Resources of Ukraine in Kherson and Mykolayiv Oblasts, conducted an expedition in the Dnipro Estuary to study its water quality. A representative from the U. S. Embassy in Kyiv was also present to observe the work. The expedition was the third conducted in connection with ULRMC's project on "Water Quality Program Assessment and Abatement Dnipro Estuary Project - Phase 2," an international technical assistance project of the U.
